We are going in winter! Thousands of people come a day in the summer, but less than 1% of them ever get to experience the winter. Let’s take a trip through the island and see the forts, the trails, the landforms, and the history in a way that few people ever get to see. This video, when released, was very special (and still is)! Since I began visiting the island in 2016 after seeing “Somewhere In Time,” I had always wanted to make a winter visit. During the winter months of 2020-2021 I frequently viewed the documentary “Ice Bridge: Mackinac Islands Hidden Season,” and also watched the other film made on the island: “This Time For Keeps” from 1947, which takes place on the island and partially during the winter. About two weeks in advance, I began planning out my trip: the day I’d go, the route I would take on the island, the music I would use in the video, and the things I wanted to capture and say on camera. In the week leading up to my Saturday trip, I called the Starline Ferry Company every day and spoke with one of the workers regarding weather conditions. The day I left for the trip, a huge snowstorm blew across the upper part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, extending from the Houghton Lake area all the way up until, I kid you not, just a mile or so south of the Straits of Mackinac. It was a treacherous drive, but so worth it. Throughout the day, as peaceful as the trip was, I could see the storm to the south, especially as the sun peaked through on several occasions and highlighted the storm. I stayed with friends in Charlevoix that night, as conditions were too dangerous to drive all the way back home. The efforts turned out to be worth it, as this remains (as of 08/11/2022) my most successful YouTube video! #travelvlog #mackinacisland #winter
