The full trip up and down rugged class 4 Elk Range 14er Pyramid Peak via the standard northeast ridge route on July 25, 2024. The mountain is one of Colorado’s toughest fourteeners. Situated adjacent to the famous Maroon Peaks, it too is comprised of the signature reddish, striated and crumbling sedimentary rock, which adds to the beauty, but also to the challenge and the danger. Following a mere mile and a half of the lower approach stroll in Maroon Valley, the route consists almost entirely of considerable elevation gain and challenging terrain afterward. After turning onto the Pyramid trail itself, I ascend steep switchbacks up 1,000 feet of incline to reach the amphitheater, which holds snow trudging and talus hopping. Then, steep, loose scree awaits on the steep ascent to the northeast ridge. Finally, the crux stretch of the day holds complicated route-finding on loose ledges, class 3 and class 4 pitches, and even jumps over gaps in the rock. Reaching the top, as always, provides a reward for one’s efforts on terms of a major challenge met, and also in the form of an amazing, sublime vista to the neighboring Elk Range and also to the wider panorama. In this video, as always I have included maps and route-descriptions, and bits of history about the mountain. Last but not least, a word of caution: come prepared physically, experientially, logistically, and educationally, as this is a tough mountain - I would say in my top 5 in terms of overall difficulty. If the weather or your own status come into question by the time you reach the northeast ridge, consider turning back. If you are able to meet the criteria and the challenges, you’re in for a spectacular experience and the memories to match. Thanks for watching!
