Shoshone Falls - Twin Falls, Idaho [HD] (2017)

Shoshone Falls, situated in southern Idaho, USA, is a majestic waterfall found on the Snake River, approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast of Twin Falls. Its grandeur has earned it the nickname "Niagara of the West." Towering at a height of 212 feet (65 m), Shoshone Falls surpasses Niagara Falls by 45 feet (14 m) and cascades over a rim that spans nearly 1,000 feet (300 m) in width. The formation of Shoshone Falls dates back to the catastrophic outburst of flooding that occurred during the Pleistocene ice age around 14,000 years ago. This natural wonder historically marked the upper limit for fish migration, including salmon, in the Snake River, and it served as a vital fishing and trading site for Native American communities. European explorers documented the falls as early as the 1840s, and despite its remote location, it became a popular tourist attraction starting in the 1860s. In the early 20th century, controversy arose when the Snake River was redirected for irrigation purposes in the Magic Valley. As a result, the falls lost their year-round flow with force. However, the irrigation and hydroelectric power stations constructed at the falls played a significant role in the early economic development of southern Idaho. The City of Twin Falls owns and operates a park that offers a splendid view of the waterfall. Visiting Shoshone Falls in the spring is recommended, as water levels are often significantly reduced during the late summer and fall due to river diversion. The flow over the falls varies, ranging from over 20,000 cubic feet per second (570 m3/s) during wet years in late spring to a minimum "scenic flow" of 300 cubic feet per second (8.5 m3/s) in dry years, which is a controlled release from a dam. © 2017 Cow Missing Productions (   / cowmissing  ) Please do not reproduce without our expressed written consent.
