How does knowledge of the maikos’ work, and their status as Kyoto’s quintessential girls, help us follow the humor woven into “The Makanai”? Jan Bardsley, author of “Maiko Masquerade: Crafting Geisha Girlhood in Japan,” delves into these questions, exploring both the Netflix series and the long-running manga that inspired it.
