I worked closely with my (amazing!) Program Manager and another ML engineer on the team (my i-Buddy!) throughout the summer. At the end of the internship, I presented my work to Apple’s VP of Camera & Photos. ✨ Salary & benefits ✨ I got paid $41/hr. I also received a relocation allowance and free housing. Plus there are a bunch of other perks that you get as an intern, including discounts at different stores. ✨ How I got the internship ✨ I reached out to a director of design at Apple who at some point gave a talk about his work to Princeton students, and I found that talk extremely interesting. He connected me with an Apple recruiter, and I had five interviews shortly after (3 technical + 2 non-technical). I was asked questions about my previous experience, my projects, my interest in computational music as well as technical questions about math (analysis, probability), machine learning, and python programming. I had a very good research fit with my prospective team, and I was offered an internship position. However, my team only hired PhD interns in the past, and I was the first undergrad intern at ACG. They wanted me to intern for 6-12 months (because that’s how long it usually takes to do a substantial amount of quality research). However, as it turned out, I couldn’t take a gap year on an F-1 student visa to intern because as soon as I take a gap year, I lose my student visa status and can’t apply for OPT. So, it took me 1.5 years to figure all these details out and eventually convince my team to have me for 3 months as a summer intern. ✨ What I liked about my internship ✨ 1. I liked the culture in my team. My Program Manager put a lot of effort into creating a welcoming, respectful, and safe working environment, and I loved that. I also liked the high standards for your work at Apple. 2. I liked the project I was working on. 3. My program manager was amazing! He emphasized work/life balance a lot; he set a good example for me since I was not very good at creating this balance in my life. He taught me that there are many parts to life, and work is just one of them. 4. I liked the studio (provided by Apple) in which I lived. The apartment complex had an amazing gym, a pool, and a sauna. 5. I like all the perks you get as an intern: internal courses/online classes, store discounts, free subscriptions (e.g. for Final Cut Pro). ✨ How to best prepare for interviews ✨ 1. Be ready to speak about your projects! Even better, demo your projects 2. Explain your thought process when answering questions 3. Persist through solving problems ✨ For high school students ✨ If you’re a high school student and want to get involved with Apple, you can participate in the Swift Student Challenge.
