CW: Addiction (implied), Blood (brief mention), Death, Derogatory language, Hunting, Murder, Paranoia-inducing, Police brutality (implied), Stalking LYRICS: There In the clearing Or the alley Or a head in the crowd over There Unprotected Separated From the pack, as an ideal Mark How their pulse pounds In their soft neck Smell the fear in the air as they Tense Hold your focus Keep your balance Bare your teeth and your claws and then: Strike Let all civilized thought drop away Submit to the instincts of yesterday Hear the primal command of creation And obey: It’s fight or fly, kill or die Prove you are not prey Find another to slay There Was that pity? Hesitation? They turn tail and there’s new prey to Track Through the nightfall Through the dawn break Through the days, eager only to Chase The dissemblers Guilty cowards The contemptible scum beneath You Are not like them Will not falter You’re a predator ready to CHORUS There Sometimes sleeping Sometimes crying Sometimes famished as you are to Feed On the anguish On the terror On the savage unmatchable High Of the bloodlust Of the challenge The implacable impulse to Act The detective Or protector Or as vengeance incarnate and CHORUS There In their fortress Flaunting safety So determined to keep their hands Clean Every hideout Every refuge Leave them nothing and nowhere to Run Feel your lungs burn And your feet bleed But to stop would deny you the Hunt The smooth talkers The mute monsters Beat the dangerous game when you CHORUS And another (x4) Another to slay SPOILERS ahead for season 5: Originally the structure of the verses was my idea for The Stranger. One thing flowing into another, the meaning changing. But I think it works better here. The Stranger is upbeat but not aggressively so. This one had to build, and Move. Would have loved a percussive element in this. A steady rhythm to imitate footfalls, or a heartbeat, or to mark the pace. But it was not to be. I had a take or two of heavy breathing like someone running being used as percussion. But a) that took me dangerously close to hyperventilation (sing safely, kids), and b) It just sounded too...suggestive no matter what I did. So I cut my losses, and had a blast snarling like a rabid wolverine into a microphone at 12:30 a.m. As one does. [SPOILERS---] This was another piece where hearing the 'in situ' was very helpful. I re-wrote a verse or two once I listened to ep 176 because it stressed something I hadn’t thought about: The idea of a pack…and knowing that at any second they could betray you, or you them because you need something to chase. With the exception of Basira, Daisy was such a lone wolf (sorry) that I never thought about The Hunt in terms of a group. The paranoia. The urge to hunt coming from self-preservation as much as it comes from chasing a homicidal high. “Prove you are not prey” came from hearing how prideful, and self-righteous the Hunters are. But ep 176 made the line much more literal. (I’d love to say I meant it to be like that all along, but that'd be a big ol' fib.) Up until the heart-to-heart in The Buried I really, really, genuinely disliked Daisy. Her cruelty coupled with Basira’s hypocrisy drove me up the goddamned wall. I love a ‘ride or die’ pair as much as anyone, but people who enable each other by convincing themselves that treating one person well justifies treating everyone else like shit? Boils my fuckin' blood. So it was all the more of a shock to see what Daisy was like when not under the influence of The Hunt. It never occurred to me she could be so changed. That bloodlust warped her to the point where all that tethered her to humanity was one (1) person and a soap opera. #relatable. I did a 180 on her so quickly it left my head spinning. Post-Coffin I felt such a sense of a relief when she appeared because she was suddenly the only one showing some fucking decency to The Archivist! (For whom I also had No Patience in Season 1, God he was an ass) And she didn't do it for forgiveness. She knew she had done terrible, terrible things for which she couldn’t and shouldn’t be forgiven. But she wanted to be better anyway. It would have been so much easier for her to go back to Hunting. She could've spent the rest of her days seeing things in black and white, chasing highs and running from repercussions. But she fought it. Not for absolution, not for a long con, not for Basira. Just because it was the kinder way of living. [---SPOILERS] Like with other characters that have a steep emotional shift - whether in a positive direction, or a Tim one – huge props to Fay Roberts for pulling it off so masterfully. And huge props to the direction of Alexander J Newall. Man, I was raised by a director, it’s an undervalued skillset in an already undervalued profession. His ability to articulate what he needs for across-the-board wonderful performances better than most people twice his age might scare me more than the actual content of the podcast.
