How to Collect a Herbarium Specimen and Tissue Sample

In this video we describe the basic steps for collecting a vascular plant herbarium specimen and an associated tissue sample, that meets the quality standards to be included in the Global Genome Initiative (https://ggi.si.edu/). This video was produced as part of the GGI-Gardens (https://ggi.si.edu/ggi-gardens) effort to collect and preserve genome-quality tissue samples from at least one species belonging to each family, 5 percent of the genera and all species of plants on Earth. Tissue and DNA samples are then made globally available for research use via the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (www.ggbn.org). Denver Botanic Gardens became a member of GGBN in 2016 and has since been collecting tissue samples to correspond with nearly every newly collected herbarium voucher specimen accessioned into the Kathryn Kalmbach Herbarium of Vascular Plants (KHD).
