Simon Mayor plays Carolan. The melody is from the repertoire of Turlough O'Carolan 1670-1738, although the authorship is not wholly clear (see below). "Although generally thought of as a Carolan tune, it's unlikely he wrote it, but he was so enamoured of it that he openly admitted he wished he’d composed it himself, and played it constantly as one of his favourites. An almost identical tune called Molly McAlpin, was reportedly the work of his contemporary Thomas Connellan, although some sources credit Connellan’s brother William. It would seem Carolan chose to make some minor alterations to this melody. Given his blindness and consequent inability to refer to written music, this could easily have been subconcious. He also saw fit to change the title, implying his own authorship. It would seem any notions of copyright, if they existed at all in 17th century Ireland, were more relaxed than today. This arrangement is in E minor rather than the original A minor; it seemed to suit the range of the guitar better." Simon Mayor 25th April 2020
