Bach-Busoni: Prelude and Fugue in E-Flat Major, "St. Anne" (BWV 552) (Messmann)

When the 2020 Goldberg project came out, a lot of people tried to figure out what my influences were in writing the concluding fugue -- but this piece, a piano transcription of an old organ piece, was probably the main one. The original "St. Anne" by Bach is a two-part composition which was originally written as the opening and closing movements of the Clavier-Übung III (collection of organ pieces). The number 3, likely representing the Holy Trinity, comes up throughout the piece (note the three "main themes" in the prelude as well as the triple fugue structure). Busoni's transcription of this piece was written to "sound like" the original piece for organ, and to do this he employs many things including doubling notes on octaves, tremolos/trills, pedaling/sustain indications, etc. -- all of these add pianistic challenges and decisions which must be made. This isn't a polished or concert-ready performance, but I thought I was ready enough to make a decent single-take recording. I hope you enjoy it :) 0:00 - Prelude 9:54 - Fugue theme A 12:12 - Fugue theme B 13:40 - Fugue theme C
