A tin found in the Arctic holds a family secret | Death In The Ice

We asked Franklin exhibition curators and experts to tell us about their favourite items from the Death In The Ice exhibition. Karen Ryan of Parks Canada tells us about her favourite object; a rusty tin can which holds a tragic story of family loss. The tin was recovered from the site of John Franklin's expedition to the Arctic. The holes in it are probably from a polar bear. Despite being beaten, frozen and soaked, its contents were recovered and some of the notes are still legible, revealing an interesting story linking a Franklin expedition crewman with Greenwich. This item among with many others are on display in the Death In The Ice exhibition at London's National Maritime Museum. This world-first exhibition is home to objects from the recently discovered wreck of the HMS Erebus together with other artefacts and curiosities, many on display to the public for the first time.
