If the Digital Euro is going to compete with cash, it is going to have to have one key feature that cash has - the ability to be used offline. That's a difficult problem to solve, and I've not seen anything from the ECB explaining how they're going to crack that conundrum. I can think of two solutions, neither of which is particularly good: a) accept that there will be significant fraud in the form of double-spending, and therefore limit the amount that can be spent to the sum of a cup of coffee or a sandwich, and suck up the losses, or b) impose DRM restrictions on the Digital Euro similar to those that the music, eBook, and movie industry tried and failed to foist on us. Can you see any other ways?
