Isle Of Arran Scotland: Glenashdale Falls And The Giants Graves Circular Walk

The Glenashdale Falls and the Giants Graves walk on the Isle of Arran Scotland is a fabulous circular walk starting from Whiting Bay. The walk climbs up through a wooded glen to reach a viewing platform for the spectacular double cascade of the Glenashdale Falls, which is the finest on Arran. The route then continues on to visit the neolithic burial grounds of the Giants Graves. These historic two chambered cairns offer a fantastic viewpoint over Whiting Bay and Holy Island. The immense views over Whiting Bay and Holy Island carry on as you make your way back down to Whiting Bay and the start, making this one of the finest walks on the Isle of Arran Scotland. Watch now to see for yourself! The Isle of Arran or simply Arran is an island off the west coast of Scotland. It is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde and the seventh-largest Scottish island, at 432 square kilometres (167 sq mi). Historically part of Buteshire, it is in the unitary council area of North Ayrshire. In the 2011 census it had a resident population of 4,629. Though culturally and physically similar to the Hebrides, it is separated from them by the Kintyre peninsula. Often referred to as "Scotland in Miniature", the Island is divided into highland and lowland areas by the Highland Boundary Fault and has been described as a "geologist's paradise". The Giants Graves are the remains of two Neolithic chambered tombs on the Isle of Arran in Scotland. They are situated within 40 metres of each other, and stand on a ridge 120 metres above the sea in a clearing in a forest, overlooking Whiting Bay to the North. Giants Grave North has been much robbed, but the edges are still well-defined. The main axis of the cairn is north–south, the north end being wider with a concave facade. The chamber is 6 metres long, and around 1 metre wide. It was excavated in 1902, and among the artifacts recovered were pottery shards, flint knives, and leaf-shaped arrowheads. Giants Grave South is at right angles to the larger northern cairn. The main axis is east–west, and the entrance was at the west end. The chamber is about 4 metres long, and over 1 metre wide. Excavations in 1902 only revealed soil and stones, however in 1961-2 further exploration produced nine sherds of a round-based vessel, and fragments of burnt bone. Whiting Bay is a village located on the Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland four miles (six kilometres) south of Lamlash and eight miles (thirteen kilometres) south of Brodick. With more than 600 inhabitants it’s the third largest village on the island of Arran, behind Lamlash and Brodick.
