With just a week to go before the 1980 Olympics Steve Ovett took on all the best milers in the world who were to miss the Games due to the boycott,and duly stuffed the lot! Cynics would complain his wave down the home straight cost him the outright world record but I'm not really sure he gave a damn...this was Ovett saying"I can beat you regardless".Although this was slightly slower than Coe's WR mark from the previous season(3.32.09 to 3.32.03) it was confusingly credited as equalling the WR due to the rounding down to the nearest 10th of a second system then used.Luckily Ovett lowered the time again later in the season to save everyone a quandary!
