Over and Out! The Last of the Air Traffic Control Radar Units - Border Radar at RAF Watton.

RAF Watton was host to a Type 82 Radar with was designed and built in the late 1950s and early 1960s. When its original task as a radar for a Bloodhound Missile Squadron just south of the airfield was ended, it was converted in 1964 to use as an Air Traffic Control Radar known by tens of thousands of aviators as 'Eastern Radar', later becoming Border Radar. Mr 'Bill' Heslington, Manager at Airworks for the final 12 years or so of its life, led a team of dedicated technicians who maintained the Type 82 and its associated equipment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until its closure in 1992. This video documents the closing days of Border Radar. Bill was a keen and talented videographer and had the foresight to document the final acts in the life of both the Type 82 and also Border Radar. I am extremely grateful to Bill for allowing me to include this video of the closure of Border Radar on this channel.
