In Reggie Bush's '03 last prep game he played in the San Diego-CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) championship game vs. Oceanside at Qualcomm Stadium in 2002. Helix was the CIF champion in 2000 and 2001 but Oceanside was too much in 2002 winning 42-14. But Bush had one of the most memorable games in CIF final history as he ran through and by the Oceanside defense, which included fake punts. Helix became the first high school in the country to have two Heisman trophy finalists in the same year. In 2004 Utah's Alex Smith (QB) & USC's Reggie Bush (RB) were both Heisman finalists. Alex Smith '02 did not play in this game because he graduated from Helix was already at Utah in 2002. Helix almost became the first high school in the country to have back-to-back #1 overall NFL picks. In 2005 Alex Smith (Utah QB) was the first overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers. In 2006 Mario Williams (North Carolina State DE) was the first overall pick by the Houston Texans. Reggie Bush (USC RB) was the 2nd overall pick in 2006 by the New Orleans Saints and many believe Reggie Bush should have been the 1st overall pick. Oceanside won 42-14 Oceanside (CA) vs. Helix Charter (La Mesa, CA) CIF-San Diego Section Division II Championship (2nd highest enrollment) at Qualcomm Stadium (San Diego, CA) Saturday, December 14, 2002 CIF-San Diego Section consists of San Diego and Imperial county.
