Caregiver Wins Series sign up: www.dementiasuccesspath.com/caregiver-wins-series #1: Giving them a "job" to do The phrase that you have a "job" for them is so effective for a lot of men. This can transform things like sorting papers, drying dishes or any other task that he may have done in his career or even chores he may have done. Into something he can take pride in and feel like he is providing for the household again. Bonus points if you thank him for a job well done and praise him for the skills he still has An example of this was when I asked one of my male patients for help with a "job" which was wiping down the tables. Even though he was in a wheelchair, he took it so seriously and actually did a good job. I thanked him and commented on specific things he did well like Wow, there aren't any crumbs anymore, you got them all! I swear to you he BEAMED with pride. At the end of the day, no matter how small, everyone wants to feel like they are valued for what they can do. #2: Asking them to "fix" or "help you" something for you If your dad, husband or grandpa was "mr fix it" this will really resonate with him. Simply get a tool board like this or some plastic pipes and ask him to help you "fix" the item. If he is this specific kind of man, he will eat this up. After he is done, be sure to praise him for fixing the item for you and bonus points if you tell him you couldn't have done it without him. Again, everyone wants to feel like they are contributing and can do the things they enjoyed doing #3 Getting him moving (preferably in a way that is a competition he can win) We all know everyone needs exercise but if your dad, husband or grandpa has aches, pains or sensory issues that come with dementia. This can be challenging to motivate them. Challenging him to the competition of racing you in his wheelchair, power walking or some other dementia friendly exercise refer to my wheelchair friendly exercise video for ideas. Will not only help him get moving which improves mood. It will give his ego a boost. Everyone, especially men it seems, like to win. Giving him a win and exercise is a winning combination.
