Finding the Mattox Motel in the Sipsey Wilderness of North Alabama

For this hike, Jonathan and I set out to try and find the Mattox Motel, which is a small cave with a nice door and window somewhere in the Mattox Creek drainage on the northern border of the Sipsey Wilderness of North Alabama. Not knowing for sure where the cave was located, we started by following an old road from the Gum Pond Cemetery to near where the Mattox Creek joins up with the Thompson Creek. Then we struck out through the trees to explore upstream on the Mattox Creek with lots of zig-zagging around as we explored. Luckily for us, we found the Mattox Motel along the top of the very first side valley that we explored, which, had we known, was only about 1 mile (1.6 km) from Gum Pond Cemetery. After having lunch at the Motel, we decided to continue to explore upstream and found an old logging road that we followed until we stumbled onto a lovely little waterfall not far from where we were parked. Finally, we climbed up out of the Mattox Creek drainage to Gum Pond Cemetery and back to our car completing about a 5 mile (8 km) loop. It was an beautiful day to do some off-trail exploration and I’ve added the Mattox Motel to my Sipsey Wilderness maps that you can find below. The Sipsey Wilderness (#sipseywilderness) lies within the Bankhead National Forest in northwestern Alabama. Sipsey was the first designated wilderness area in Alabama in 1975 and now encompasses about 24,922 acres (10,086 ha). Rivers and streams have carved canyons and valleys in the limestone and sandstone of the local plateau resulting in a wide range of micro-climates in a short hiking distance, some amazing natural features, a few historic sites, as well as endless nooks and crannies to explore. Wilderness camping, building campfires, hunting, and fishing are permitted. Sipsey is a "Leave no Trace" area (https://lnt.org/why/7-principles/) with, despite appearances, no designated fire rings, camp sites or facilities. Unfortunately, there are many traces of the hundreds who hike and camp here every year. Please be considerate and do not add to the already extensive damage in this special place.
