Roughing out the new vice jaw for the shaper. Round nosed HSS tool is taking an easy 80 thou cut which gets the metal off pretty quickly, but does throw scorching hot chips all over the place. Trimming the corners is a little more civilised, 60 thou deep cut with 20 thou hand feed, so far less workshop cleanup required afterwards... First real job I've done with a shaper, so still getting the feel of the thing. Lessons learned? Flame cut steel is a bast*rd to machine, the angle grinder was required to remove the hardened 'skin'. I thought I would just bevel the edges and take it off with one heavy cut, no such luck. Never had this much trouble with flame cut steel before, but it's never been 3 inches thick before. Bigger flame = thicker hardened layer?? Camera auto focus can't cope with a moving shaper ram..... :)
