Preserving Modernism The talk between Gayane Umerova, Rem Koolhaas, Jean-Louis Cohen moderated by Ekaterina Golovatyuk is a joint reflection on preservation of the recent past and an occasion to present the Tashkent.Modernism XX/XXI project. Modernity and preservation of heritage are often regarded as opposites; however, the two have been inseparably connected throughout the 20th century. While the modern movement considered itself as a protagonist of a new era, distinct from the past, today, 100 years after its birth, subsequent diffusion and crisis, we are still having difficulty in understanding its legacy and relation to the present. The vast modernist heritage of Tashkent provides an opportunity to reflect on this paradox, elaborating the new conceptual and technical tools for its evaluation and preservation.
