http://www.NationalDrugScreening.com | 866-843-4545 Alcohol Drug Testing Many times, employers call us about alcohol testing because there seems to be a lot of confusion about the different types of alcohol testing. Today I'm going to go through a few different types and what you should be aware of in regard to alcohol testing. We regularly receive calls from employers about different types of alcohol testing. Sometimes they want hair alcohol testing, sometimes they want urine alcohol testing, sometimes blood alcohol testing, and sometimes breath alcohol testing. And each one of those is a valid test but they test very different things. Hair testing and urine testing for alcohol is really more of a lifestyle test and is testing for consumption not immediate impairment or under the influence. That's a very important distinction. If, as an employer, someone conducts a urine alcohol test, it may come back positive if they had a glass of wine or a beer last night at dinner or they could have some type of illness that is actually creating alcohol in their body. For impairment types of testing, you're typically going to be using either blood alcohol testing which is more invasive, more expensive and also somewhat more difficult to get done or you are going to be using, what is pretty much the standard these days, and that's breath alcohol testing. There are differences out there depending on what you're looking to accomplish as an employer. Breath alcohol is typically what you're going to use unless there is some regulation or some other reason that requires blood alcohol testing. The only times really that an employer might use hair alcohol testing or urine alcohol testing if it's part of some type of substance abuse recovery program or Second Chance agreement etc. If you're not sure what type of alcohol testing that you need, talk to somebody who can give you the right answers and steer you in the right direction.
