5 Things To Bring On Your Bike Ride - Ep. 74

5 things I carry on every bike ride to make the ride safer, smoother, and more enjoyable. 1) Helmet I know, I know. This is seen as dorky by some folks. I used to feel the same way. Becoming a dad made me reconsider and now I rarely ride my bike without a helmet. My advice: splurge and buy an expensive helmet. I have found that they are much safer and are much more comfortable. Yes, it does suck to spend the money up front. However, if you are in a crash, the $200 spent on a good helmet is much cheaper than the medical bills and is a small price to pay to come home and see your family. Hot or cold, I always bring some water with me to keep cool and refreshed. It is also nice to have if you end up with mechanical issues and are out longer than you intended to be. I cant tell you how many times I have used my bike tool on a ride to adjust handlebars, brake levers, or to tighten up a loose spoke. Throw it in your bag and forget you have it with you until you need it! Also, if you don't want to carry a bike tool in a pack or in a pocket, there are a few companies who make bike tools that fit into your handlebars...these things are awesome (link: https://amzn.to/3Xpfb8B) My bike tool of choice: https://amzn.to/4e1PTV7 4) Bike Pump A small, handheld bike pump can save your a$$ on a long ride. Low tire pressure makes any ride harder, slower, and less enjoyable. You don't need a full sized pump, a small one that fits onto a water bottle holder or in a small pack works great. Yes, I am...I acknowledge that...but, I have seen some gnarly bike accidents over the years. Because of this, I always bring a small first aid kit with me. Whether it is just covering a blister, cleaning out a small cut, or actually fixing something major so you can get to the ER, a good first aid kit provides peace of mind and just might save you.
