Dr. Kiran Kumar K | Appointment booking number: +91-9663516934 Consultant Psychiatrist & Director | The Nirvana Center, Marathahalli, Bangalore Schizophrenia is a prototype psychiatric disorder. We call it as a psychotic disorder, that is a disorder of thinking, which leads to lot of disorganized behavior in the patient, might lead to causative symptoms in the form of hallucination, delusion, disorganized behavior, disorganized thinking. Basically the patient loses his touch with the surrounding and reality. But what is bipolar disorder? Bipolar disorder is a very common mood disorder that we come across in psychiatry. If atleast 1 % of the population gets affected by schizophrenia about 3 to 8% population can get affected by bipolar affective disorder. So in general as clinical psychiatrists we see more number of cases of bipolar disorder than schizophrenia. What is bipolar affective disorder? Bipolar affective disorder is a common mood disorder, as the name indicates, there are two poles. As the first name indicates, there is mania, where the patient has excessive talking, elated mood, grandiosity, increased capacity to work, reduced need for sleep, occasionally hyperreligious. He also presents with the other end of the spectrum, called as depression, were the patient has sadness, loss of interest, loss of pleasure in previously pleasurable activities and gets withdrawn. There are these two poles, then we say that the patient is affected with bipolar affective disorder. So to summarize schizophrenia is more of a disorder of thought, with usually a psychotic dimension, whereas bipolar affective disorder is a disorder of mood or affect we cal and occasionally become psychotic when symptoms become severe enough.
