The lecture describes super heater used in boiler in detail. The description includes details of convection, radiant and separately fired super heaters. Convection super heaters can further be divided into parallel flow, counter flow and combined flow super heaters. Constructional details and working of these super heaters is taken up in this lecture. Super heated steam is required at high pressure and temperature in modern thermal power plants. To cope up with this requirement, radiant and separately fired super heaters are used. Their description has also been included in this lecture. It becomes essential to control pressure and temperature of super heated steam. The reason being that the plant may be running at part load. This is achieved by modifying the position of burners by tilting them. Another method is by having multi layer burners. These burners can be operated individually and heat supplied to super heater may be reduced. In the end of lecture, there is brief description about material selection for super heaters.
