Why I Don't Want a Smart Watch (at least not yet)

As a follow-up to last week's video about watch alarms, I thought I should acknowledge the Smart Watch as an option for those who want more versatility with the kinds of alarms one can get from a watch. But I also wanted to go into detail about my overall impressions of smart watches. I have decided that I don't want one yet. The reasons are best summarized by the simple notion that a smart watch is more of an extension of one's smart phone rather than a watch. In a Pro-and-Con analysis of having a smart watch, it's clear that the "Pro" reasons are mostly related to the functions which are extensions of a smart phone's capabilities. They have very little to do with timekeeping. The "Cons" are also generally the same "Cons" one could list for a smart phone and which are unlike most other non-smart watches. For example, a normal watch doesn't have to be recharged nearly as often as a smart watch needs to be recharged. A normal watch may need a new battery every few years, but the battery changing process is simple and doesn't involve specialized batteries. It's something a guy like me can do at home. A normal watch is often more durable than a smart watch. A normal watch can still function perfectly well after several years of use whereas a smart watch will likely no longer be able to function with an up-to-date operating system and up-to-date software after 3-5 years of use. But if you are willing to "think differently" about what a watch can be, then perhaps a smart watch will be a good choice for you. It can have extraordinary features like a heart monitor and other health monitoring functions, for example. You may design an entire fitness program around the watch's monitoring of your daily activities. And you may enjoy having a new and possibly more convenient want to receive and send text messages and email. You can even listen to music, watch videos and make phone calls from a smart watch without having to touch your phone. But, somehow, this still doesn't seem like the right kind of gadget for me right now.
