CAWTHORNE: Barnsley Parish #11 of 17

Up to now, my experience of the local relief whilst doing this channel have largely been flat -literally - as there have not been many hills to climb, and with the exception of maybe Edlington with it's pit top "stump-henge", I haven't had many reasons to climb a hill....until now. Barnsley is all about the hills the further West you go, and now we're tackling some of those Western Barnsley communities, the foothills of the Pennines are starting to become much more of an issue when route planning! This one started off pretty flat though, as I wandered through the churchyard, happening upon a memorial to the Norcroft Colliery Disaster, and then the HUGE Spencer-Stanhope mausoleum. Down the hill and to the village hall, passing a few places of note along the way, the real hill climb started by coming back the way I went, trekking up to the museum and cenotaph before finding myself in one of the most intriguing village centres I think I've ever been to. How many other villages can you honestly say you've been to that have a drinking fountain shaped like a cross? I'll wager not many. There are lots of references in the village too, to this parish's standout feature, and I will happily admit that climbing the hill to get to it is no mean feat. I am of course referring to Cannon Hall, with it's Georgian exterior overlooking a gigantic park complete with shimmering lakes and waterfalls, and hiding behind it an award winning farm and farm shop - and all of this would perhaps be one of the cheapest days out you'll ever have if you go for it! Provided you've got the stamina for the hills, there's no reason why you too, can't go and visit the parish of CAWTHORNE. **** My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands. Join me as I try to visit every single parish in the borough of Barnsley. There are 17.
