Lycian Way, Turkey

9 days of solo hiking in Turkey... As soon as I heard about the Lycian Way hike in Turkey I was super keen and ready for a proper adventure. One Canadian guy in particular told me that I could camp along the trek each night using just a hammock, and then wouldn’t have to carry loads of gear. I was pretty inspired so I went and got myself a hammock. I was going alone, but my intention was to meet other people along the hike and do sections of the trail together. Turns out everyone had stopped doing the hike because of the brutal heat (Turkish summer was coming), so the whole time I only briefly met one crazy German guy who hiked in just trainers like me. Except he did the whole 500km! I like walking, but not that much haha. In total I did about 150km, but the hike would take you from the beach right up to the top of a mountain village then all the way back down to the ocean again, all in the blistering heat and completely by myself. It was definitely a mental and physical roller-coaster but one of the coolest feelings knowing I was completely out there by myself. I stayed some nights in the hammock and other nights at village ‘pensions’ where super friendly local families would spoil me silly with amazing food (particularly breakfast). The first night of the trek I was laughing at myself because I couldn’t even find 2 trees next to each other to set up my hammock. There were only bushes. I was thinking “damn you Canadian guy, sending me out on this death mission” haha. In the end the only 2 trees I found were right on the edge of this massive cliff (see photo). I checked the hammock like 20 times before climbing in. I had only had my Turkish towel as a blanket and ended up damp in the morning but it was well worth it for the view. A Turkish towel is the best travel accessory ever, by the way. I finished my hike hitchhiking out of a small village and got picked up by a young Turkish guy smoking a joint with his English bulldog in the front seat. Was a great random moment haha. The hike was the end of 2 months in one of my favourite countries I’ve every travelled to. More videos of Turkey to come! 🎵Gnork - You Are Totally Shot with only a GoPro4.
