Diagnosis for red lesions present on tongue surface - Dr. Jayaprakash Ittigi

Red lesion is generally called as eryrthoplakia. Erythroplakia is defined as a very red patch which cannot be characterised clinically or pathologically as any other diseases or any other lesions. So erythoplakia commonly occurs due to the mechanical trauma, chemical injury, thermal injury or any other kind of irradiation effects or in case of ischemic disorders. Erythroplakia is a smooth, velvet granular or nodular lesions often seen with the well defined margins occurring on the surface of the normal mucosa. So red lesions are commonly seen on the surface of the tongue, dorsal surface of the tongue, tip of the tongue, floor of the mouth and the palate region and the retromolar areas. Erythroplakia or red lesions are commonly associated with broken dentures, overhanging restorations and in case of any broken teeth. There can be managed with proper restorations and the repair of the broken dentures and the removal of the broken root stumps. So they are also associated with erythroplakia or red lesions are commonly seen on tobacco chewers and in case of alcohol users.
