In this information-packed seminar, delivered a mere 5 weeks after the infamous 1981 Mr. Olympia contest (and 11 months after the 1980 Mr. Olympia fiasco), Mike Mentzer came to Rexdale, Ontario to give a bodybuilding seminar. There were approximately 40 people in attendance, including me, and we were impressed with how much training and nutrition information he imparted. In this seminar, Mike covered the following topics: Gaining muscle is a slow process Realistic expectations from your bodybuilding training Nutrition for muscle-building Calorie reduction for fat loss (with insights into how he dieted for the 1980 Mr. Olympia contest) The importance of carbohydrates in bodybuilding exercise The real role of protein in the bodybuilder’s diet Thoughts on the controversial 1981 Mr. Olympia competition The Colorado Experiment Intensity and duration as factors in training How physiologically we are all essentially the same, thus making our training requirements practically identical Close-grip versus Wide-grip chins: which is better? E-Z Curl bars versus straight bars: which is better? Muscle fiber types and training Hypertrophy or hyperplasia? The threat of overtraining This is Mike at his extemporaneous and articulate best. I recorded this on cassette, seated on the floor about twenty to thirty feet away from Mike, so the audio quality is what it is but the content is wonderful.
