AM I A LUKEWARM CHRISTIAN? | THE LOVE THAT GOD HATES

But there is one type of love that God hates. That’s coming up next on the BEAT. Hey everyone my name is Allen Parr thank you so much for tuning into the BEAT. Today we are talking about what it looks like to be a worldly Christian. And it is my belief that one of, if not the biggest, problem within Christianity today is that too many Christians profess to be Christians but the lifestyle would say otherwise. The Bible teaches that there are four classes of people (non-Christian, baby Christian, worldly Christian, spiritual Christian). Let’s look at how God feels about worldly Christians. 1. James 4:4 – Speaking to Christians James reminds them that, “Friendship with the world makes you an ENEMY of God.” 2. Rev. 3:15-16 – So He’s not saying I wish you were saved or unsaved. But rather he is suggesting that COLD water is good and useful and so is HOT water but lukewarm water is USELESS and He wants to SPIT it out of His mouth! So what exactly does it look like to be a worldly Christian? Let’s break this up into two categories. BELIEFS 1. Rom. 12:2 – Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world. In other words, don’t let the world system that we are surrounded by squeeze you into its mold. But instead be TRANSFORMED by renewing your mind. 2. A recent poll showed that 57% OF ALL PROFESSING CHRISTIANS BELIEVE THAT THERE IS ANOTHER WAY OTHER THAN JESUS TO GET TO HEAVEN? 3. When Christians believe that because our society has evolved that it’s now okay to redefine marriage to be between two people from the same sex, that’s a worldly belief. 4. When you believe that it’s okay for two Christians to live together before marriage because it’s more economically feasible CHRISTIANITY IS TRENDING TOWARDS WORLDLINESS. 5. And Jesus says, “When I see lukewarmness I want to spit you out of My mouth.” 6. The reason why this angers God is because it reveals that we fear the rejection and value the opinions of men more than we do God. The second thing that characterizes a worldly Christian is not only their BELIEFS but also their BEHAVIOR. 1. Comfortable in sin a. When you are living in perpetual sin AND your heart is no longer tender and grieved over it that is a sign that you’re trending towards worldliness. b. The Bible describes this as a “seared” conscience; comparing it to skin that is now burnt and insensitive to feeling. 2. Spiritual Stagnancy – Paul said to the Corinthian church, “I could not talk to you as I would spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to the world.” Why? Because they had not progressed in their understanding of God to the point where they would even be able to receive deeper teachings from Paul. It’s natural for us to have high and low seasons but if you are not growing spiritually over a long period of time you could be trending towards worldliness. 3. Worldly Love – Finally John described worldliness as people who are controlled by the lust of the flesh (people who are dominated by things that gratify their fleshly desires), lust of the eyes (people who lust after what they see and as a result their minds are obsessed with obtaining more and more wealth and possessions rather than giving to others), and the pride of life (people who are absorbed with themselves and things that make them look good in front of other people.)
