How to felt a sheep wool rug (Timelapse with instructions) - Raw wool fleece

This is a part of my Yule Goat costume project, to see the finished costume, or if you want to support my art, go to this post:   / 15859289   Thank you! ----- Turn on subtitles/cc for instructions! ----- So I am making a YuleGoat/Krampus mask and costume thing and I wanted to use real sheep's wool for the mask and try to felt the raw wool fleece (that has been sheared from a sheep/ram living on a farm here in Sweden) so that I didn't have to use a sheep skin and also didn't have to glue the wool on etc. Pretty much all I used to felt this was water and soap (såpa)! I did not come up with this, it has been done by many others before me! I mostly used these instructions by Zara (when there, scroll down for English): https://zararooke.com/2015/08/21/hur-... ----- Making of the Yule Goat timelapse video:    • Making of the Yule Goat / Julbocken -...   Thanks for watching! :) ----- Turn on subtitles for instructions! But also, check out Zara's blog for more: https://zararooke.com/2015/08/21/hur-... ) Or read instructions below: - I bought sheep's wool - raw fleece - from a farmer here in Sweden that had sheared the wool from the sheep so that it was still pretty much holding together as an entire fleece if handled carefully before felting it. It was already pretty clean when I got it (no poop or grass and stuff in the wool), but not washed and I did not wash it before I started felting, it will be washed in the felting process. - Made a frame of some spare wood and chicken wire (75x95cm). I Pre-drilled holes so the wood wouldn't crack and put two screwes at each corner. Used a staple gun to attach the chicken wire. - In the bottom of the frame I put bubblewrap with the bubbles upwards. - I put the wool in the frame upsidedown (cut-side upwards). I went through it all making sure it was neatly packed and in the right directions. - I had alpaca wool (so soft!) that I carded (about 100gr) into rolags/roving/batt(?) - Then put this on top of the other wool in two layers. - Took this into our perfectly tiny bathroom. If it wasn't winter I would have been outdoors for sure! - Used a piece of tulle fabric just to be able to touch the wool without it sticking to my hands. Showered it with warm water, soaked it and pressed down with my hands. Also poured soap (såpa) on my hands while pressing the wool down and rubbing - this will help the wool to felt. - Kept doing this all over the wool, rubbing it with my soapy hands, adding more water when needed, and using the fabric when needed, until it was beginning to felt together on the surface. - Used a rolling pin (kruskavel) a bit but I thought it worked better to just keep rubbing it with my hands. - Then I rolled it together tightly, used rubber bands around the roll, and also a piece of linen fabric because just the bubblewrap was too slippery! (I guess a towel or something works too) - Then I rolled this with my feet on the floor. Rolled it from all four edges of the "rug" - so open it up and reroll it on the stick from all sides to make the felting even. I rolled ca 200 feet-rolls from each short side and ca 50 rolls from each long side. Check every now and then so you don't felt it too much. - You can see the brown water, it is being washed out with the water and soap when felting it! - When done I put it in a sink, twice with only water to wash it out, then a third time with a bit of vinegar essence in the water and let it soak for a few hours before I got it out and let it dry. - Then I had to fiddle a bit with getting locks free and sort out some patches that had been felted too much and also remove some loose wool. - I used a felting needle to attach a couple of locks that was loose or patch up holes etc. A piece of styrofoam or some kind of upholstery foam is handy when felting with a needle. + I ate a tasty clementine. ----- Music from the Youtube Audio Library, Track: Belief, by: Silent Partner.
