But just what are those weaknesses, and how much of the country is voting on machines that could be hacked? NowThis correspondent Lulu Friesdat went to DEF CON, one of the largest hacking conventions in the world, to investigate. The machine covered in this story — the ES&S M650 Optical Scanner — has no password and can be hacked in a matter of minutes in a way that could change election results. It is in use in 24 U.S. states. The problems with this machine were revealed in an in-depth security review in 2007; yet, according to experts we interviewed, its manufacturer has not released a patch or updated the security since then.
