Hi, I'm Dr. David Weinstein, a periodontist in midtown Manhattan. As a NYC periodontist, one of the questions I frequently get asked is: What is a dental implant? A dental implant is a way of replacing teeth without using bridges or dentures. It's really an amazing process. A titanium post is actually placed into the bone. The bone cells then fuse to the post and that turns into an extremely tight bond. You would return to your dentist to get a crown right on top of the tooth. If you're missing multiple teeth, multiple implants can be placed through most areas of the mouth. Even dentures can be replaced with dental implants. The process is a very easy one -- it's generally just two steps. The first step is placing the dental implant. You then get a three month healing period. The second step is placing a crown on the implant. This part does not require any local anesthetic, and is completely painless. I'm David Weinstein, and I'll see you in another video.
