The tower is built on what was previously called Axelsborg. Vålandstårnet is a lookout tower built in 1895, with a guardhouse for the city's first pressurized water pool. Before today's Våland tower was built, there must have been a lookout tower on this square. This was built during the Napoleonic War in the period 1807–1814.
