So far, there has not been any example of making a giant horse-riding statue like this within two months. We sculptors worked day and night to complete it, showing the loyalty of our people." 6. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Yang Moo-jin, North Korea analyst and professor of North Korean studies: "North Korea is insisting and propagandising that Kim Il Sung founded North Korea and Kim Jong Il developed the country. Based on this fact, (by placing two statues at the same location) they are trying to state that they will continue the legacy under the Kim Jong Un regime. In other words, it seems as if they are saying that they will continue to rule the country through the Songun (military-first) policy and self-reliance ideology. It appears placing the Kim Jong Il statue next to Kim Il Sung's statue has this kind of strategic purpose." 14. Cutaway mid of Yang 15. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Yang Moo-jin, North Korea analyst and professor of North Korean studies: "By placing the Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il statues, I assume that the North Korean government is reminding the people of their past achievement and leadership. It is meaningful because the statues are there to strengthen the North Korean people's loyalty and solidarity to the system." 16. Various of Yang reading a book about Kim Jong Il STORYLINE The first bronze statue of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il was unveiled in Pyongyang as part of celebrations marking what would have been his 70th birthday this week. Top political and military leaders attended the unveiling ceremony on Tuesday on the grounds of the Mansudae Art Studio. Kim's son and the country's new leader, Kim Jong Un, did not attend. The monumental sculpture depicts Kim Jong Il and his father, North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, on horseback. Officials say it is the first sculpture of Kim Jong Il cast in bronze, like the imposing statue of Kim Il Sung in downtown Pyongyang. The bronze figures of the horses and the Kims are 5.7 metres (18.7 feet) high, and are placed on a granite base three metres (9.8 feet) high. According to North Korean state media, while he was alive Kim Jong Il gave instructions that he did not want to see a statue of himself put up. The sculptors say they completed the statue in less than two months. There are other statues of Kim Jong Il in North Korea, but they are not in public or open spaces.
