Have You Had Metro Detroit’s UNIQUE Almond Chicken?

This week, I ventured out to Taylor, Michigan, to check out a spot that’s been on my radar for a while—New Hong Kong. Known for serving up some of the most iconic Chinese-American dishes in the Metro Detroit area, I was excited to dive into their menu and see how they stack up One of the main highlights of my visit was the almond boneless chicken, a dish that’s become a true Metro Detroit staple over the years. If you’re from the area, you know exactly what I’m talking about. This isn’t your average almond chicken—it’s a deep-fried chicken breast served with a rich, savory gravy, and it’s unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere. It’s a dish that’s deeply rooted in the culinary history of the region, and New Hong Kong definitely knows how to do it right. The chicken was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and the gravy was packed with flavor, perfectly complementing the crunch of the chicken. This dish came as part of a combination platter, which also included a generous serving of fried rice and a classic egg roll filled with bean sprouts—a simple but satisfying side that rounded out the meal nicely. But I didn’t stop there. I also ordered a combination of General Tso’s chicken, another Chinese-American classic that’s a favorite for many. The General’s chicken was exactly what you’d expect—crispy chunks of chicken coated in a tangy, sweet, and slightly spicy sauce that’s just irresistible. The balance of flavors was spot on, with the heat from the chili peppers being just enough to keep things interesting without overpowering the dish. Like the almond chicken, this dish was served with fried rice and an egg roll, making it a hearty and filling option that left me more than satisfied. Before diving into these main courses, though, I started my meal with a bowl of their old-style wonton soup. Now, this isn’t your typical wonton soup—it’s packed with a variety of fresh, crisp Chinese vegetables, including bok choy, carrots, pea pods, and mushrooms. The wontons themselves were tender and flavorful, swimming in a broth that was light yet rich, with a depth of flavor that made it the perfect way to warm up on a cool day. The combination of the fresh vegetables and the savory broth made for a comforting, satisfying start to the meal. Overall, New Hong Kong delivered a classic Chinese-American dining experience that really hit the spot. Whether you’re a fan of almond boneless chicken, General Tso’s chicken, or just looking for a great bowl of wonton soup, this place has something for everyone. The flavors were bold and well-balanced, the portions were generous, and the atmosphere was just what you’d want from a neighborhood Chinese restaurant—welcoming, unpretentious, and focused on good food. So, if you’re in the Taylor area or just on the hunt for some top-notch Chinese-American fare in Metro Detroit, I highly recommend giving New Hong Kong a try. You won’t be disappointed!
