The name also refers to the night when Lord Shiva performs the heavenly dance. Why is Maha Shivratri celebrated? Maha Shivratri is predominantly a Hindu festival, celebrated annually in honour of Lord Shiva, the God of destruction. Shivratri is celebrated in every month of the luni-solar calendar, in accordance with the Hindu calendar but once a year, in late winter Maha Shivratri is celebrated to commemorate the oncoming summer. Om (or Aum) Sanskrit: ॐ, ओम्, romanized: om is the sound of a sacred spiritual symbol in Indic religions. The meaning and connotations of Om vary between the diverse schools within and across the various traditions.
