‘The Four Loom Weaver’ is an ‘'industrial ballad' written in the early 19th century, probably by an Oldham weaver. It was written as Britain's economy was in a period of upheaval and the ruling class engaged in increasingly paranoid authoritarianism: inflicting wage cuts, land expropriation and restricting large gatherings. Developments in weaving technology meant that many hand weavers became unemployed and, in their extreme poverty, were reduced to eating nettles. The song records the experience of the capitalistic destruction of a particularly militant, eloquent, and politically sophisticated group of workers. By singing this song we invoke their memories and their struggles for their class. We released this video on Christmas Eve, in reflection of the fog and mire of winters coming. There was historically a long held tradition of telling scary stories on Christmas Eve, particularly before the 19th Century. This is almost certainly connected to the ancient festival of Yule and the winter solstices’ ever-darkening days. This lost tradition is perhaps most famously (and recently) represented in the spectral hauntings of Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’. The story held within this song is shocking not because of any goblins, ghouls or ghosts but because of the tangibly bleak reality faced by its narrator. We hope that it may remind us of the value in mutual support and care for one another this particularly chaotic Christmas season. Shot by Michael Hamilton of The Real Music Video Company in New Mills, High Peak. Sung by Mataio Austin Dean.
