1 Year Living in Detroit

I moved to Detroit, MI one year ago and here is my take on the good and the bad that the city has to offer. 👉Let me know if you're thinking about moving to Detroit or if you've moved to a new city or town recently. I'd love to hear how you're doing. I hope it's going well. Time stamps are below. 🔔Like, subscribe, and comment! Pros: Things to do, price, comeback, beauty, neighborhoods, people, and proximity to other cities. Cons: Crime, economy, public transit, abandoned buildings, lack of big stores, segregation, reputation. Other: Weather; it depends on the person but I'm fine with it. 0:00 Intro 0:30 Things to do There are many things to do and places to see in Detroit including the Detroit River, Belle Isle Park, GM Renaissance Center, Greektown, Motown Museum, and more. 1:46 Crime Detroit has one of the highest crime rates in the country. 2:30 Price It's a major city at a small town price. Insurance and taxes are pricy but the housing is one of the cheapest for a major city in the US. 2:57 Economy There's high poverty and the job market is bad for many residents. Tech is growing though and there are still many jobs in the auto industry. 3:41 America's Great Comeback City Detroit is improving every year and trying to combat the past 60 years of neglect. Many new projects have been completed or started in recent years or will soon like the Michigan Central Station renovation, Ralph Centennial Park, Gordie Howe International Bridge, and Joe Louis Greenway. Also, many people are buying and fixing up abandoned house making the amount of quality housing units higher in the city. 4:40 Public Transit, Bike lanes, and Roads DDOT buses can take you anywhere in the city but they are slow and many large streets don't have any bike lanes. There is the qline which is a tram but it only goes a few miles on Woodward Ave. 5:39 Beauty Whether it's the water, architecture, or parks, Detroit is cool to look at. My favorite is the old brick houses in the snow. 6:20 Abandoned buildings and empty lots There are many abandoned houses and businesses across the city. For some it's like a horror movie, for me it's a blatant reminder of Detroit's history. 6:53 Unique Neighborhoods The character of each neighborhood is fascinating to me. Some of the most intriguing are Southwest Detroit, University District, Grandmont Rosedale, Warrendale, Jefferson Chalmers, and East English Village. 7:46 Lack of big stores and some activities that may only be in the suburbs Walmart, Target, and Kroger are all located near but not in Detroit. Others like Meijer and Home Depot are on the outskirts of town. 8:20 The people Detroit is a diverse city/metro area with the highest population of Arab Americans in North America, the highest percentage of African Americans for a major city, and a whole neighborhood called Mexicantown. Also, most Detroiters take pride in their city and want to see it succeed. 9:01 Segregation Race seems to still be a dividing factor in where people live in and around Detroit. 9:43 Proximity to other cities Detroit is really close to Chicago, Toronto, and Cleveland to name a few. 10:37 Reputation Everybody hates Detroit or so it seems. Not everything you hear is true. 11:04 Weather Detroit is cold for a good chunk of the year. It also rains slightly less than the average and snows slightly more than the average. It can also get hot in the summer especially when there's humidity. 12:00 Right decision to move to Detroit? Yes, I enjoy Detroit a lot and the issues don't really affect me as much as others. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 💳Credit Cards to help you save on travel: -Chase Freedom Unlimited(best all-around credit card) or Freedom Flex: https://www.referyourchasecard.com/m/... -Chase Sapphire Preferred(annual fee card for travelers w/huge bonus) https://www.referyourchasecard.com/m/... -Discover Chrome(best credit builder), earn $50 and double cashback: https://refer.discover.com/s/ldfrm -Hilton Honors(hotel card and large signup bonus): http://refer.amex.us/ANTHOVVjEL?XLINK... -IHG Rewards Club Premier(hotel keeper card) https://www.referyourchasecard.com/m/... *Most if not all referral links give us a bonus when you use our link.
