Termoli-Molise-Italia🇮🇹/4K/HD/DJI/Drone/Italy/Maluphotography16/Cinematic/Aerial-Shots/Campobasso

Termoli is a town with around 32,000 inhabitants in the province of Campobasso in the Molise region. It is located 90 km southeast of Pescara and 200 km as the crow flies north-northeast of Naples. Termoli is the seat of the Catholic diocese of Termoli-Larino. The historic port town of Termoli, located in sunny central Italy, is a worthwhile destination for beach holidaymakers and history buffs. The town is located on a headland jutting out into the sea in the Molise region, which is still not very popular with tourists, southeast of the Abruzzo region. Termoli's landmark is an extraordinary castle on the edge of the historic center, which is surrounded by a natural stone wall. The most representative building in Termoli is the Hohenstaufen Castle, dating from the 11th century, which is a mighty natural stone bulwark against the sea. The fortress building known as Castello Svevo (Swabian Castle) is part of the historic fortifications. Also worth seeing is the 10th century cathedral in the heart of the town of 30,000 inhabitants, an impressive example of Romanesque architecture. The first church is believed to have been built around the 6th century on the ruins of a temple dedicated to Castor and Pollux. This is only documented in the 10th century. A cathedral was built as a bishop's seat in the 11th century, traces of which were discovered in the apses during restoration. The current building was built between the 12th and 13th centuries in the Romanesque style with transitions to the Gothic style. The decline in the following centuries was exacerbated by the earthquake of 1456 and the invasion of the Turks in 1566. It was not until the 18th century that it was restored and given a Baroque look. Bishop Giannelli then lowered the choir, where the relics of St. Basso and Timothy, the patron saints of the town, were found, and a new high altar was built. Started in the 1930s under Bishop Bernacchia and completed in the late 1960s by Bishop Proni, the interior was "returned to its original appearance" by removing the baroque elements during a comprehensive restoration. A crypt was created under the raised choir using reinforced concrete. The cathedral was given the status of a minor basilica by Pope Pius XII in 1947. The visit of Pope John Paul II in 1983 is recorded on the facade by bronze plaques by the sculptor Piero Maggioni. But now we hope you enjoy the video!
