This assault leads to inflammation and subsequent damage to thyroid cells, diminishing their ability to produce thyroid hormones and resulting in symptoms of hypothyroidism such as fatigue, weight gain, intolerance to cold, constipation, dry skin, hair loss, and depression. In some cases, this condition prompts the thyroid gland to enlarge, forming a goiter, though this is not universally present. Diagnosis typically relies on blood tests revealing elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (TPO antibodies), alongside thyroid ultrasound imaging that can depict the gland's characteristic changes due to this disease.
