Wood Versus Metal Snare Drum Comparison

Here is a video comparing two of my favorite deep (6.5") snare drums for playing jazz. They are a 1960's Premier 14" x 6.5" Royal Ace COB (chrome over brass) snare and a 1983 Gretsch Centennial 14" x 6.5" snare (wood Jasper shell). Both of these drums are great in their own way so I wanted to demonstrate the differences as well as the similarities between them. Both of the drums are outfitted with calfskin heads and have the original curly snares installed. If you want to skip the talking here are the performance locations: Time Stamps: 0:00 Discussion 6:35 Gretsch Drum on the Drum Set 10:50 Premier Drum on the Drum Set The Gene Krupa calf head video I reference is located here:    • Gene Krupa "Sing, Sing, Sing" on The ...   The other drums used in the video are all Gretsch Centennial from 1983. The sizes of these drums are: 18" x 14" bass and 10",12" and 14" toms. The cymbals in this video are all 1940's- 1950's K Zildjian except for a Masterworks 24" Swish/China Cymbal sizes 21" K ride 18" K crash/ride w/rivets 15" K Hi Hats 24" Masterworks swish/china with rivets The drum heads are all Earthtone calf skin. Microphones are two Sennheiser MKH 800's for stereo overheads and an AKG D112 on the bass drum.
