If it hadn't been for a late venue change and the resulting email, I would have missed Reb Fountain’s first ever Sydney performance and a truly brilliant experience. There’s often a tendency when discovering someone new to compare them with well known artists, and while several performers did come to mind at various times during Reb’s performance, it soon became obvious that to do so would be belittling Reb’s originality and uniqueness. Emerging from NZ’s ‘alt-folk’ scene, she cemented her name in her home country supporting Crowded House in 2021. She’s since had her own sell out national tour there. While she’s played Melbourne and Adelaide before (as well as Europe and the UK), this was her first time in Sydney. Beginning the show with a solo number, the audience was instantly captivated by Reb's mesmerising voice, haunting lyrics and commanding stage presence. Very few performers can bring it altogether like she did. The three musicians, who surrounded Reb for the rest of the set, also need to be commended. Dave Khan on guitar, keyboard and violin, Karin Canzek on the bass, and Earl Robertson on the drums. Each adding their own layer of brilliance to the performance. My only complaint was that it ended far too soon. The Great Club’s strict curfew meant we missed out on the encores which I’d been hoping to video. I now wish I’d recorded one or two other songs. There had been a beautiful version of “Samson”. Here are the four songs I did record: Hey Mom (00:29) Faithless Lover (06:02) Psyche (10:38) Don’t You Know Who I Am (17:30) Unfortunately for the band and venue, the night wasn’t well attended. However, for those of us lucky enough to be there, this created a lovely intimacy to the show. It’s extremely unlikely I’ll ever get to experience Reb Fountain in such a small, personal space again. Why she’s not already selling out much bigger venues in Sydney I’ll never know.
