Former historic house manager Craig Johnson participated in the 2014 Attingham Trust Summer School Program studying the architecture, interiors, and landscapes of the English Country Estate. This is a slide show travelogue of that adventure--with thanks to his classmates, the Attingham Trust, and his employer, the Minnesota Historical Society, for sending him. The Attingham program focused on curatorial aspects--design, craftsmanship, preservation--of these estates and their contents, and there was much to learn! There are, of course, other social, cultural, and economic histories contained in these estates, particularly relating Britain's class system, fortunes created from the country's imperial past, the demise of a large number of estates during England's 20th century economic and wartime woes, and the roles these estates now play as public museums, pillars in the important tourism economy, film locations, etc. For more information on the Attingham Trust programs visit https://www.attinghamtrust.org. This video is included in the playlist Literary Lockdown--personal reflections on literature, theatre, history, and art. Created by Craig at his home in south Minneapolis during the 2020 COVID-19 quarantine. Also oops, typos: the designer is Robert Adam, not Adams. My bad. And it should be Cotswolds...but our course materials spelled it Cottswolds. Their bad!
