Richard Strauss a été arrêté à l’âge de sept ans avec sa mère, Olga, par la Gestapo de Varsovie. Ils sont incarcérés à la prison de Pawiak mais Richard est libéré et confié à une femme pendant plusieurs mois avant de retrouver sa mère. Au début de l’année 1944, Richard et Olga sont réunis et déportés depuis Varsovie jusqu’au camp de Ravensbrück. Sa mère est affectée au travail dans un kommando extérieur pendant que Richard essaie de s’occuper avec les autres enfants du camp. Ils sont placés dans le baraquement des femmes victimes d’expérimentations médicales. A l’approche des Alliés, Richard et sa mère sont transférés au camp de Bergen-Belsen. Le camp est surpeuplé et presque plus aucune nourriture n’est donnée aux déportés. Ils sont libérés le 15 avril 1945 par les troupes britanniques. Richard est atteint d’une pleurésie et doit être soigné. Il reste dans un hôpital militaire jusqu’en juillet 1945 avant d’être envoyé dans un sanatorium à Malmö. Richard et sa mère restent en Suède jusqu’à l’été 1948. Ils partent pour la France où ils ont de la famille. Il est placé au Château de la Guette puis dans une maison d’enfants à Moissac. C’est en 1996 qu’il témoigne pour la première fois publiquement pour la Fondation Spielberg. Ce témoignage a été recueilli par le Mémorial de la Shoah en 2004. They were placed in the barracks for female victims of medical experiments. With the approach of the Allies, Richard and his mother are transferred to the Bergen-Belsen camp. The camp was overcrowded and the deportees were given almost no food. They are liberated on April 15, 1945 by British troops. Richard suffers from pleurisy and must be treated. He remains in a military hospital until July 1945, before being sent to a sanatorium in Malmö. Richard and his mother remain in Sweden until the summer of 1948. They leave for France, where they have relatives. He was placed at the Château de la Guette, then in a children's home in Moissac. In 1996, he gave his first public testimony for the Spielberg Foundation. This testimony was collected by the Mémorial de la Shoah in 2004.
