When experts speak of microbes it’s not only viruses and bacteria they’re talking about, a microbe is every minute organism that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The term is broad and used to describe many different types of life forms, with dramatically different sizes and characteristics. Even for specialists, it can be exceedingly difficult and time-consuming to identify a microbe to the level of species, however, it’s usually quite easy to place them within one of the higher levels of classification. The various methods used in identifying microbes are largely dictated by the nature of the microbes themselves. Some microorganisms may require nothing more than a little casual observation of living cells with a light microscope (e.g. Ciliates), others will require considerably more patience and care. Speaking from my humble experience, it is usually the case that the more complex a microorganism is, the easier it is to identify, not to say it’s an easy task, it’s just relatively easier, it’s almost a certainty, that you’ll be able to identify a Tardigrade (Eukaryotic multicellular organism) much faster than the bacterium E.coli (Prokaryotic organism).
