This ritual is devoted to the Serpent Gods (the female one - called Nagayakshi, and the male one - called Nagarajavu) and it is performed in Kerala, a state in South India. The ritual encompasses a possession of the performers. Sometimes even the spectators get possessed by the Snake God and fall into a deep trance. Sarpam Thullal is believed to be the oldest worship practice on the planet. It is generally performed only every six years and done for the people who are deprived of an offspring. It is said that the Serpent God possesses the power of fulfilling the dream of having a baby. Furthermore, it is also a votive offering to Serpent God in order to gain family wealth and happiness.
