It’s common to see grandmothers selling vegetables on busy streets, earning only around ten dollars a day—barely enough to afford a single meal. Others spend their entire day pulling carts, collecting paper and cardboard, just to sell them for a meager sum. The largest demographic affected by suicide in Korea is, in fact, the elderly, driven by economic hardship and isolation. What’s frustrating is the lack of clear solutions. The younger generation and society as a whole face their own challenges, making it difficult to address the issue comprehensively. However, there may still be ways we can make a difference on an individual level. Take Aiden Kim, for example—a Korean-American pharmacist from Los Angeles. One day, Aiden was struck by the image of elderly grandmothers struggling on the streets of Korea, and he felt compelled to help. On a spontaneous trip to Korea, he started assisting these elderly women, and his compassionate efforts soon went viral on social media platforms. Now, he’s dedicated himself full-time to this cause, spreading love and positivity, and working toward resolving the issue of elderly poverty and loneliness, one step at a time. In today’s episode, we’ll dive into Aiden’s personal story and discuss the broader issue of elderly poverty in Korea.
