SMTP makes sending email messages easy. Watch to learn what SMTP is and how it works. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, or SMTP for short, is a TCP/IP protocol used for sending emails. It's limited in its ability to receive messages, so it's typically used in conjunction with other protocols in order to receive emails. SMTP is a three step process: an email server uses SMTP to send a message from an email client, such as Outlook, to an email server. The server then uses SMTP as a relay service to send the message to the receiving email server. Finally, the receiving server downloads the message using an email client, such as IMAP.
