Ron Cephas Jones, Emmy-winning actor Obituary And Funeral

According to a spokesman, renowned stage actor Ron Cephas Jones, who won two Emmys for his performance as a long-lost father who finds forgiveness on the NBC series This Is Us, has passed away at age 66. The actor passed away "due to a long-standing pulmonary issue," according to Jones' manager, Dan Spilo.Everyone who had the privilege of knowing him "felt his warmth, beauty, generosity, kindness, and heart throughout the course of his career," Spilo added. In 2020, Jones spent about two months in a Los Angeles hospital after undergoing a double lung transplant for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Jones played William "Shakespeare" Hill, a biological father whose life is revitalized by his interactions with Randall Pearson's (Sterling K. Brown) family on This Is Us. "One of the most wonderful people the world has ever seen is no longer with us," Brown wrote on Instagram. The world has dimmed a little. You are dearly cherished, sibling. We will miss you very much. Jones had a larger role in the show's first few seasons, but he appeared in some capacity in all six seasons because to the show's time-jumping plots, which gave performers like him a second chance to shine even after their characters had died. Jones has been nominated for an additional two Emmys and has already won one for best guest actor in a drama series in both 2018 and 2020. "Ron was the best of the best - on screen, on stage, and in real life," This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman remarked. "Holy crap, what a performer. Everything he did was perfect, and I don't think I ever had to change a take of his in a cut. Even after his transplant caused him to relearn how to breathe and walk, Jones returned to Broadway, where he had spent the most of his career before and after This Is Us. In an interview with the New York Times published in 2021, Jones noted, "My whole life has been the stage," after disclosing that he had been experiencing breathing difficulties around the time he started working on This Is Us. The thought of never performing again was more terrifying than dying, Jones added. His performance as a truck stop cook in Clyde's by Lynn Nottage earned him a Tony nomination and a Drama Desk Award in 2022. Jones is a native New Jersey resident who attended Ramapo College initially planning to major in jazz before changing his mind and focusing on theater. He took a bus driving job in southern California for a few years in the late 1970s and early 1980s during his time spent hitchhiking around the country. After settling in New York in the 1980s, he became an active member of the poetry, hip-hop, and performing arts communities by frequenting the Nuyorican Poets Café. In 1994, he had his big break playing the lead in the drama Holiday Heart by playwright Cheryl West. Over the subsequent decades, he was a fixture on stage, performing in numerous Off-Broadway productions and Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company productions, as well as a title role in Shakespeare's Richard III at the Public Theater. Jones has also appeared on Mr. Robot, Luke Cage, and Lisey's Story as a guest star. His film credits range from Half Nelson (2006), in which he co-starred with Ryan Gosling, to Dolemite Is My Name (2019), in which he co-starred with Eddie Murphy. His daughter, Jasmine Cephas Jones, is among those who will miss him.
