The citizenship test After the government has received your application and if you meet the requirements for Canadian citizenship, you will be asked to take a citizenship test. A notice will be sent to you outlining the time, date and location of your test. You will either take a written test or attend an oral interview, both of which test your knowledge of Canada. Either test also determines if you can effectively communicate in English or French. Applicants who are under 18 or over 54 do not have to take the citizenship test. After you take the test you will receive a notice which will either invite you to attend a citizenship ceremony or inform you that you did not pass the test. In the event that you do not pass the test, you will be asked to appear in front of a citizenship judge who will ask you questions and determine if you meet the knowledge and language requirements for Canadian citizenship. The citizenship ceremony If you successfully pass the citizenship test you will be asked to attend a citizenship ceremony. The ceremony must be attended by all applicants who are over the age of 14. At this ceremony you will take an oath of citizenship, along with many other people at the same time. This ceremony welcomes you into Canadian citizenship and confers upon you the rights and responsibilities that go along with it.
